Referrals and Provider Support

We’re dedicated to providing compassionate, community-centered genetic care to Southwestern New York and Northern Pennsylvania. Whether you're looking to refer a patient or are simply seeking support in selecting genetic testing, understanding inheritance patterns, or risk assessment, we're here to support you. Our goal is to collaborate with and support local providers, ensuring that you and your patients have access to the most comprehensive genetic care available.

Why Refer to a Genetic Counselor?

Genetic healthcare is complex, and ensuring patients receive the most accurate risk assessment, testing, and guidance is critical. As board-certified genetic counselors, we specialize in navigating the nuances of genetic medicine, helping both providers and patients make informed decisions.

By referring to a genetic professional, you’re ensuring your patients receive:

  • Comprehensive Risk Assessment – We take a detailed personal and family history to assess inherited risks for conditions such as hereditary cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and rare genetic disorders.

  • Expert Guidance on Testing – With a vast and evolving landscape of genetic tests, we help determine the most appropriate option based on clinical history, reducing unnecessary or inappropriate testing.

  • Informed Consent & Patient Education – We provide thorough pre-test counseling, ensuring patients understand the benefits, limitations, and potential implications of genetic testing.

  • Accurate Interpretation of Results – Genetic results are not always straightforward. We translate complex findings into actionable insights and communicate them in a way that makes sense to both patients and providers.

  • Psychosocial Support – A genetic diagnosis or the possibility of one can be overwhelming. We help patients navigate emotions, family communication, and next steps with compassion and expertise.

  • Collaborative Care – We work closely with referring providers to integrate genetic insights into a patient’s overall healthcare plan, ensuring the best possible outcomes.

Referring to a genetic counselor not only enhances patient care but also supports providers by offloading the complexity of genetic testing, interpretation, and patient counseling. We’re here to be your trusted partners in delivering high-quality, personalized genetic healthcare.

    - Prenatal counseling (carrier screening & NIPT)
    - Hereditary cancer counseling
    - Cardio-genetic counseling
    - Direct-to-consumer testing support
    Among other specialty services.

We’ll handle the counseling for you.
A comprehensive genetic counseling session typically lasts anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes. We’ll manage patient education, take a comprehensive personal and family medical history, conduct a risk assessment, provide complete informed consent, create a testing plan, counsel on results, and provide evidence and guideline-based recommendations for management and surveillance.

New York State and Pennsylvania law currently prohibit genetic counselors from ordering genetic testing independently, so we’ll communicate clearly with your office what testing we recommend and handle the rest for you.

  • Because NY and PA law limit our ability to order testing independently, we collaborate closely with referring providers- offering detailed pre-test counseling, completing requisition forms, and coordinating with your office to ensure the appropriate tests are ordered. We also counsel on results, ensuring seamless communication and patient care throughout.

  • We currently do not bill insurance directly, however our contract providers may be able to bill insurance on the patient’s behalf.

For patients of non-contracted providers we offer affordable out-of-pocket payment options and are happy to provide a receipt to submit to insurance for possible reimbursement. In an effort to increase access to care, we also provide financial assistance for those who qualify, please call our office for more information about financial assistance programs.

Rates do not include the cost of testing, which may or may not be covered by insurance based on the patient’s insurance carrier, personal medical history and family history.

Genetic testing and counseling is an approved expense for many health savings accounts (HSA) and may be reimbursed accordingly.
